Leisure Where You Want It: Hammock Frames

When we think of a hammock probably the most common vision that is conjured up in our minds is one of a person lying in a hammock suspended between two palm trees on the beach. The person is sipping a cold drink under the golden sun and is the very picture of leisure and relaxation.

Of course we all know that you can also hang a hammock between two trees in your backyard or in a campground. But what about those whose landscaping doesn't allow for such an ideal situation for hanging a hammock? This is no problem at all as it is now even more common to use hammock frames for hanging your hammock.

Hammock frames make it possible to enjoy the comfort of resting in a hammock without the need for a permanently anchored "frame" such as trees or poles. There are many different types to choose from and all are designed to support the hammock and the weight of one or more persons, depending on the size.

The most basic of hammock frames is a metal type that has a very simple construction. These are typically the kind that comes with inexpensive hammocks and they are often easy to disassemble and relocate. However, because they can be taken apart they are less stable than some others and are functional rather than decorative.

Of course there are other types of frames that might appeal more visually. One common style has a bowed shape that rests on the ground and the hammock is suspended from the upper points of the frame. There are normally two legs going across the bowed frame that provide the balance.

Most frames work well with any type of hammock, although size may be an issue. They are usually made in neutral colors such as white, green or brown so they work with both rope and material hammocks.

Some hammock frames have a rather square shape, while some are more arched and rounded. You can also find wooden frames, which are a natural and beautiful alternative to the metal frames which are often painted in various colors.

It may be a little scary to use a hammock frame at first. With trees you know that your "frame" is very stable and won't go anywhere, but you might worry that a metal or wooden frame could tip over while you are on the hammock. This does sometimes happen, but not with regular use, and because it is near the ground it is not very dangerous when it does.

With hammock frames you can enjoy the relaxation of swinging gently in a comfortable hammock anywhere there is enough room for one, without the need or extra ropes or other anchors for it. They are a great alternative for any backyard or to take along on vacation.
